Sometimes the biggest visual improvement to a home doesn't come from a renovation. It comes from cleaning up what's already there. This front landscape in Erie Commons is a good example — the plants are healthy, the bones are solid, but a warm winter and a busy spring let everything get ahead of itself.
Shrubs had grown into each other, branches were reaching out over the sidewalk, and the bed had lost its definition. The lawn around it was patchy where the overgrowth had been blocking light and moisture. One visit changed all of that.
What we did
- Removed overgrowth. Branches that had crossed into walkway space or other plants were cut back to clean lines. Not aggressive — just enough to restore shape and separation.
- Re-established structure. Each shrub was pruned back to a natural form. The goal isn't a perfect sphere — it's a plant that looks intentional and maintained.
- Opened up the bed. Dead material and debris at the base of the shrubs came out. That airflow matters for plant health going into the heat of summer.
- Left it clean. All clippings cleared. Sidewalk and driveway blown off. The after isn't just tidier plants — the whole front of the house reads differently.
If your shrubs got away from you over the spring, early summer is still a good window to bring them back before the heat peaks. Cutting into late summer stresses plants heading into dormancy — sooner is better.
Why it matters
Curb appeal is the first thing people see, and overgrown shrubs work against everything else you've done to keep your yard looking good. A clean bed makes the lawn look better, makes the house look better, and takes one thing off your mental list for the rest of the season.
This job took a single visit. The homeowner had been looking at those shrubs all spring. That's the thing about landscape cleanup — it's rarely as big a project as it feels like from the inside looking out.
